Choosing a service that’s right for you

There is no single formula to find the right service but here are three things you can do that may help:

  Be clear about your needs

Take a few minutes to think about what you are looking for and identify the service types that are the 'best fit'.  There may be a number of different service types that are worth a look. For example, you could enhance your relationship by participating in group education programs or through couple counselling - it all depends on your preference.  For information on the main types of services click here.

If you would prefer to talk to someone about the types of services available you can visit a Family Relationship Centre or call the Family Relationships Advice Line on 1800 050 321.

  Identify your options

As with any consumer choice, avoid ‘impulse buys’.   It may be temptng to use the first service available but it can be worth taking some time to identify all of the options before making a decision.

The FRSA Service Directory lists services that are funded through the Commonwealth Government's Family Relationship Services Program (FRSP) which regulates the quality of services through Approval Requirements that all services must meet.  To find services in your area click on your State/Territory and then select a region.  There is a description of each provider organisation and the main types of services they provide.

There may be more than one service in your area that you could use. It is a good idea to contact both services before making a decision about which one to use.

 Making a choice

You may want to think about the following:

  • First impressions — Chat over the telephone with two or three services before making an appointment. What are your first impressions?
  • Atmosphere — Do you feel welcome at the service? How do support and professional staff treat you and other clients?
  • Physical setting — Is it appropriate for services you require? Too formal? Too casual? Do you feel comfortable and safe there? Is it child friendly?
  • Access — Location, transport and hours of operation all affect access and whether a service will suit you.
  • Affordability — Service costs or fees vary across organisations and service types, contact services to find out about their fee policy.  If money is tight don't worry, it is a funding requirement that services reduce or waive fees where appropriate.
  • Age, gender and culture — Are you more comfortable with a particular gender or age or will a different perspective be helpful? The main point is that you understand and feel understood.
  • Philosophical approach — You don’t need to agree on everything, but a belief that the service and its professionals can help you is important. FRSA members offer different approaches, some will appeal more than others. Check this with the individual service.
  • Personal match — Can you engage easily with the professional/s or do you find yourself wanting to withdraw or withhold?
  • Qualifications — the level and type of training of service professionals may be of no importance or major importance to you. While individual qualifications vary, all FRSA member services comply with the Australian Government’s FRSP Approval Requirements.

Remember, the right service is the one that meets your needs.
