SUMMARY:Attachment Style Interview
DESCRIPTION:ASI – Accreditation Course \nCompass Seminars in collaboration with Secure Base Solutions is delighted to offer this unique learning experience available for Australian practitioners working with vulnerable families in child protection and out-of-home care. \nThis four-day course is designed to enable practitioners to use the Attachment Style Interview (ASI) to assess the ability of birth parents\, kinship\, current and prospective foster carers\, guardians and adoptive parents to form meaningful\, healthy\, nurturing relationships. \nThe ASI is an audio-recorded\, semi-structured interview that takes around an hour and half to administer. It uses standardised thresholds for scoring that provides an in-depth picture of relationships and attitudes to closeness. The ASI is one of the few attachment style interviews that has an accessible method of questioning and scoring to assess both secure and insecure relating styles. Administering the ASI provides an opportunity to plan and implement targeted supports and scaffolding to reduce risk\, and work with parents/ carers and professionals to increase resilience. The interview establishes not only the attachment style but also whether the degree of insecurity is mild\, moderate or marked. This information is based on the evidence\, removing any bias and subjectivity by the assessor. \nThis course is a unique opportunity to explore the use and value of the ASI and to become skilled in the delivery and coding of the ASI. Developing insight into the type and degree of a caregiver’s insecurity provides assessors with the specifics necessary to decide a future course of action\, whether that be an intervention\, further support\, or approval for placement\, adoption or reunification. \nThe ASI’s can greatly assist Child Protection\, Out-of-Home Care and Permanency interventions due to its ability to: \n\nAssesses strengths\, resilience and risks in individuals\, the couple relationship and the support systems of children who have experienced significant trauma and/or abuse\nAssesses caregivers’ likely resilience and ability to provide a stable family context for children\nProvides a means of evidencing parents/caregivers’ support needs over the course of crises and stressors\nExplore how attachment disorders may be properly conceptualised\, to inform more targeted planing and treatment.\n\nWho Should Attend? \nThis workshop is suitable for a range of professionals including social workers\, psychologists\, psychiatrists\, teachers\, case managers\, legal professionals and researchers\, who work with vulnerable families in the child protection\, out-of-home care\, and permanency arenas. Participants are not required to have any particular qualification however\, they need to have relevant experience within the field and the ability to reflect on their practice and work relationally with clients. The course is also suitable for PhD and masters level researchers and academics. \nCourse Structure \nThe training is run in two blocks: firstly three consecutive days then a fourth day four to six weeks later. In between the two blocks participants will carry out a pilot ASI. \nBlock 1: 27 – 29th July 2021 (live in person) \nBlock 2: 30th August 2021 (via Zoom) \nTraining takes place in small groups to ensure that each participant receives individual support and coaching throughout. There is a maximum of participants. Using a number of illustrative case vignettes\, the presenters provide guidance on the application of attachment styles in different contexts and with various client groups\, including child protection\, foster care\, residential care\, youth work\, juvenile justice\, mental heath\, family and children’s courts. New formulations are offered for problems that have resisted treatment and cases demonstrate how the ideas can be applied in real therapeutic settings. \nIt is essential that you can commit to attend the full day of each of the dates of training in order to be accredited to administer the Attachment Style Interview. \nParticipants who successfully complete the course and gain accreditation to administer the ASI\, automatically become members of the ASI Community of Practice\, granting them access to post-course support and resources for one year (included in the price of the workshop). \nAims \nBy the end of the training participants will: \n\nUnderstand the impact of secure and insecure attachment style (and their variants)\nConduct and rate a reliable ASI interview\nParticipate in and understand the importance of quality control for semi-structured interviews\nConsider and understand the uses for the ASI in the context of child protection/ out-of-home care\nUnderstand the overall Attachment Style ratings and develop the skills to administer the interview\nUnderstand the role of an evidence based tool in assessment\, planning and intervention\n\nCourse Inclusions \n30 hours of course tuition\, three manuals\, certificate\, full catering (Block 1) and additional post-course support and resources as part of the ASI Community of Practice \nTrainers \nLiz Sanders has a background in Social Work and Family Therapy and over thirty years experience working with vulnerable children and adults for whom the experience of early abuse\, trauma and insecure attachment continues to impact negatively upon their lives. Originally from the UK where she managed mental health services across London along with experience at adoption agencies\, schools and Newpin UK. She previously managed Uniting NSW/ACT’s Newpin program\, leading its transformation into a successful re-unification program\, that became Australia’s first Social Benefit Bond. Liz has presented on working therapeutically using an attachment model at a number of national and international conferences and provides consultations and supervision in NSW\, QLD and ACT. \nIn 2019 Liz and Lisa Gardiner came together to establish ‘Secure Base Solutions’\, focussing on providing evidence-based attachment assessments and resilience lead interventions. In partnership with Compass Seminars and the Centre for Abuse and Trauma Studies (CATS) at Middlesex University\, Secure Base Solutions has brought training in the Attachment Style Interview (ASI) to Australia – both adult and adolescent versions and the Parenting Role Interview. The application of this approach moves practitioners on from being trauma informed to being trauma responsive and is applicable across the lifespan. \nPost-workshop ASI Resources and Support \nParticipants who successfully complete the workshop and gain accreditation to administer the ASI\, automatically become members of the ASI Community of Practice for one year. Members will receive additional support in rating complex ASIs and will have access to the online and local forums\, including shared resources. \nPayment plans are available on request.\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThe course requires a minimum number 4 participants.  Please take this into account when making travel and accommodation arrangements. Should the course not proceed all payments received by Compass Seminars will be refunded in full via bank transfer – there will be no reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs. \n
