SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing- An introduction
DESCRIPTION:One of the biggest challenges facing staff who work with individuals\, couples\, families and young people is working with individuals who may act in a way that puts themselves or others at risk. This could be in the short term through aggression to others or self-harm or in the long term through an unwillingness to seek professional support when needed\, use of tobacco\, alcohol or other substances\, poor diet or lack of physical activity. \nMotivational interviewing is a counselling method that involves enhancing a client’s motivation to change by connecting with the client empathically and helping the client understand any ambivalence the may have towards change and\, where possible\, help the client form a plan to achieve the change they desire. \nMotivational interviewing encourages the helper to work in a respectful\, empowering and non-judgemental way and not push the client towards change that they are not presently ready or able to achieve. \nMotivational interviewing is a highly structured and efficient intervention and\, once mastered\, can be used with variety of client groups. \nMotivational interviewing has been found to be effective in helping people parent more effectively; seek professional assistance when needed; adopt healthy behaviours; reduce use of harmful substances; overcome problems in the expression of anger and; reduce problem gambling. \nWhile motivational interviewing is a very powerful\, simple and effective intervention there are some situations where it should not be used and these will be discussed in the workshop. \nLearning Outcomes \n\nUnderstand the principles of Motivational Interviewing\nLearn simple techniques to promote positive change in clients.\nUnderstand when not to use Motivational Interviewing\n\n  \nWho should Attend \n\nThis workshop will benefit anyone who works in a setting where they are involved in helping young people and adults make positive change in their lives.\n\n  \n
