SUMMARY:THE CREATIVE AND PURPOSEFUL USE OF ACTIVITIES IN GROUPS
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the use of structured and unstructured activities in groups in order to enhance creative learning and produce positive outcomes for group members. \nGroup work programs often include structured activities\, accompanied by instructions on how to conduct them. Often there is minimal information regarding how to process them. The value for group members is less about the activity itself\, and more about the meaning that they take from it. Integral to this is how the group leader facilitates the discussion to enhance learning. \nThe appropriate choice\, and success\, of activities is inextricably linked to many factors such as the purpose of the group\, composition of the group\, stage of group development\, balance of task and maintenance functions\, dynamics of the group and experience of the leader\, to name a few. Questions about When\, What\, How\, Why and even If an activity should be used will be addressed\, with reference to group work theory. \nEvery group is different and a group work program cannot be “one size fits all”. The effective group leader knows when to depart from structure and respond in the here and now. This may involve introducing a structured or unstructured activity\, or leaving out a planned activity\, to meet the current needs of the group. \nThis practical and experiential workshop examines the group leader’s decision making process by linking the use of activities to group process and dynamics. Developing a sound rationale for your use of group work activities will enhance your confidence and competence. \nYou will have the opportunity to share your favourite activities\, plus bring to the group any that you would like guidance on. \nA range of activities will be explored with the use of small and large group discussion and role plays allowing all participants the opportunity to experience them first hand. \nWorkshop Outcomes \nParticipants will: \n\nExamine the use of activities in relation to group process and dynamics\nIdentify factors to consider when deciding on the appropriate use of activities\nDiscuss the opportunities and constraints involved in the use of activities\nExperience at a practical level a range of activities\nIncrease confidence and competence in facilitation and processing skills\n\nWho is this Workshop For: \n\nGroup leaders who are about to\, or have recently started\, running groups\nGroup leaders who have been running groups for some time with minimal group specific training\nGroup leaders who would like to increase their confidence and competence in facilitating and processing activities\n\n
