SUMMARY:Webinar: Working with Young People – CARE Schools – An Alternative to Jailing Our Kids
DESCRIPTION:The number of young people involved in the juvenile justice system in Australia is on the rise. Although many intervention programs have been designed\, implemented and reviewed\, the problem continues.\nThe role of education in decreasing recidivism has been shown to be of great importance but\, as with other initiatives\, it does not seem to be a complete solution. \nAlternative education approaches\, however\, have not received extensive research attention\, and the role of Curriculum and Reengagement in Education (CARE) schools in reducing recidivism has been explored even less. \nCARE schools provide a holistic approach to schooling\, attempting to alleviate the basic problems our young people face. \nThrough the lens of school leadership and youth support and development workers\, this presentation will highlight the work of a Western Australian CARE school\, its alternative education approach and the initiatives that are helping keep the young people in its care from involvement with the justice system. \n\n\n\nLearning outcomes\nParticipants will learn about: \n\nthe existence and role of CARE schools\nthe wholistic nature of alternative/individualised education\nwhy the current juvenile justice system is not working and alternate approaches are needed.\n\n\n\n  \nIdeal for\nYouth workers\, social workers\, community organisation workers\, educators in the justice system\, child and family workers and counsellors at any level of experience.  \n\n  \n\nAbout the presenter\nDr Lukas Carey completed his Doctorate in Education and has worked in the field for most of his career as a coach\, teacher\, trainer\, and educator. \nWhile filling a role in Australian local government he was charged with and convicted of receiving secret commissions and served time in prison. \nDuring and since Lukas’ incarceration\, he developed a strong interest in the role that previously incarcerated people have in the development of policy and procedure in the justice system concerned with education\, recidivism\, and post-release employment. \nAs a current CARE school principal working with young people removed from mainstream schooling\, his experiences are firsthand and extensive. Lukas is also a strong advocate for the importance of Lived Experience in all forms of education and the importance of including the voices and experiences of all. \n  \nFormat\n75 minutes of content and 15 minutes of moderated Q&A’s. \n  \nRegistration information\nRegistrations close 48 hours before the webinar start time. \nIf paying by invoice\, proof of payment needs to be provided at least 24 hours ahead of the event. \nIn addition to the live event link\, all registrants will receive a link to the webinar recording post-event. \nWhen you click to book\, you will be taken to our new and improved payment gateway.
