SUMMARY:Workshop: Borderline personality disorder - at the edge (Camberwell)
DESCRIPTION:\n2016 Professional Development Workshop Series\n\nTrue to its name\, borderline personality disorder (BPD) confronts therapists with ideas and situations that seem to be on the edge of what is acceptable\, expectable\, and even tolerable. Our practice may also then gravitate toward such an edge. A psychodynamic approach can help to manage occasions when borderline personality disorder presents in therapy. Using a variety of psychodynamic theories to illuminate participants’ case material\, this workshop will deal with the phenomena of boundaries\, self-harm\, suicidality and difficult feeling the therapist may experience. Some familiarity with the work of Klein and Bion would be helpful\, but is not essential. \nOutcomes\nParticipants will: \n\nunderstand the symptoms of borderline personality disorder\nhave an overview of appropriate therapeutic responses\nunderstand when it is appropriate to make a referral.\n\nIdeal for\nCase managers\, counsellors\, clinicians\, social workers and psychologists. \nAbout the presenter\nStuart Thomas is a Consultant Psychiatrist in private practice and at Latrobe Regional Hospital with an interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy and nutritional and environmental medicine. He also works with medical students as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Monash University\, and provides clinical supervision for psychiatry trainees and clinicians from various disciplines.
