SUMMARY:Dyadic Developmental Practice\, Brisbane
DESCRIPTION:It is an approach that: \nIntegrates recent research in the areas of neurobiology of trauma\, early child development and attachment theory\, to produce a therapeutic and parenting approach that assists professionals to understand and effectively support children with trauma- attachment problems\, and their families \nCommunicates playfulness\, acceptance\, curiosity and empathy (PACE) in order to help the child regulate their feelings (often fear\, shame and anger) associated with past experiences and to create together new meanings to be integrated into the child’s life story (autobiographical narrative). \nRecognises the vital role which adoptive parents\, foster carers and residential workers play in the recovery of traumatised\, attachment-resistant children. \nProvides a set of principles that can support networks; inform and enrich parenting; and can support the child outside of the home eg. in residential settings and at school \nThis introductory 28-hour training course is relevant to professionals and therapists who have experience in communicating with and working therapeutically with children and young people and their families. It is focused on families and residential care homes when children have experienced past developmental trauma and have associated attachment difficulties. Principles and interventions are presented through formal discussion\, case examples\, videotape of therapy sessions\, role-play\, and hand-outs. This course is part of the pre-requisites to becoming a certified DDP practitioner. A MAXIMUM of 24 participants is permitted. \nBy the end of this course participants will understand: \nThe impact of secure developmental attachment on neurological\, affective\, cognitive\, and behavioural development \nHow developmental trauma (abuse and neglect) create insecure and disorganised attachment patterns which impede normal development \nPrinciples of psychotherapy\, effective communication and parenting that facilitate the development of attachment security \nSpecific strategies of parenting and communication that facilitate the development of a secure attachment and help children integrate past trauma and abusive experiences \nHow the caregiver’s attachment history and attachment patterns can be important factors when providing care for children who have experienced developmental trauma. \nKim Golding is a Clinical Psychologist whose influential work has contributed to improved support for foster\, adoptive and residential parents\, schools and the range of professionals supporting children growing up in care or in adoptive families. She has authored several books including Creating Loving Attachments\, which she co-wrote with Dan Hughes. As a board member of the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Institute she accredits and trains professionals in the approach in the UK and speaks about this work internationally as a leading voice on children with attachment difficulties. \n

DESCRIPTION:Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) offers professionals an efficient\, user-friendly and evidenced based approach that is responsive to the practical realities of working with young people and adults. The role of counsellors\, and other professionals rests largely on the ability to interact with people in ways that emphasises individuals’ strengths/ resources\, identifies possible solutions and supports movement to change. \nWith an emphasis on “what works”\, SFBT focuses on the reality that change is the name of the game. It’s used with clients with anxiety\, depression\, trauma\, disruptive behaviours and a host of other emotional and well-being issues. SUMMARY:Difficult Conversations-How to Talk to Children and Young People About Almost Anything - Hobart\, TAS
DESCRIPTION:This one day workshop is for anyone who may have potentially difficult conversations with children and young people. This could include: case managers\, team leaders or direct care staff working with children\, young people and families; carers and workers in foster care or staff in residential care. The difficult conversations could be about: helping the child or young person managing their own difficult feelings; engaging and motivating a young person; responding effectively to the difficult behaviour of a child or young person; answering questions as to why a child or young person is not living with their family; delivering difficult news; supporting a child following a difficult incident or; managing disclosures of abuse among many other possible topics. \nThe workshop will cover: assessing the child or young person’s development level and developmental needs prior to a potentially difficult conversation; a simple structure that is applicable to many difficult conversations with children and young people; the importance of having a positive purpose or purposes in mind prior to and during the difficult conversation; how to use language in a way that is respectful and honest and; the how\, when and where of delivering difficult news to children and young people. The workshop will be very interactive and there will be ample opportunity to ask questions. Each participant will leave with a suggested structure and guidelines for a difficult conversation they may be planning in the future. \nLearning Outcomes \nAt the end of the course the participants will: \n\nBe aware of the need to assess the child or young person’s developmental level and development needs prior to the conversation and have developed their skills in performing these two tasks.\nHave a simple\, clear structure for many difficult conversations with children and adolescents.\nUnderstand the need to have a positive purpose for any conversation with a child or young person and know how to establish a positive purpose.\nHave developed their skills in using language in a way that is respectful and helpful as possible while being honest and direct.\nHave developed their skills in delivering difficult news to children and young people.\n\n
