SUMMARY:Solution Focused Brief Therapy 2 Dayer
DESCRIPTION:  \nEvent Contact: Ben Monaghan \nContact Email: ben@compassaustralia.com.au \nSolution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) offers professionals an efficient\, user-friendly and evidenced based approach that is responsive to the practical realities of working with young people and adults. The role of counsellors\, and other professionals rests largely on the ability to interact with people in ways that emphasises individuals’ strengths/ resources\, identifies possible solutions and supports movement to change. \nWith an emphasis on “what works”\, SFBT focuses on the reality that change is the name of the game. It’s used with clients with anxiety\, depression\, trauma\, disruptive behaviours and a host of other emotional and well-being issues. This popular workshop offers a thorough overview of the approach and covers cases from substance abuse\, trauma\, mental health\, child and adolescent difficulties. \nYou will learn: \nWhy the fundamental shift from “problem-driven” to “solution-driven” can dramatically change the outcome of any interaction. \nHow to use cooperative relationships and an individual’s language\, beliefs and preferences to define changeable problems\, and develop highly meaningful and specific goals. \nWhen and how to use a range of techniques and tools; through detailed demonstrations\, skills practice exercises\, discussions and video examples of ACTUAL therapy sessions. \nHow the use of “future-focused” questions\, building on exceptions and reframing of problems\, shifts people away from the problem and towards change. \nWhat the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the approach are\, and why the resilience research supports it. \nWhy presenting ideas and interventions as “suggestions” and “experiments” instead of directives can improve the likelihood of clients taking action once they leave your office. \nHow issues such as “risk” fit with the Solution-Focused approach. \nMichael Durrant is a psychologist and Australia’s leading international trainer of Solution Focused Brief Therapy. He is director of the Brief Therapy Institute in Sydney\, President of the Australasian Association for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy\, Honorary Associate to the Faculty of Education and Social Work – University of Sydney\, and a visiting faculty\, to the Special Education Program – Fontys University\, The Netherlands. He has published four books and numerous articles\, and is particularly known for the application of Solution-Focused interventions in school and mental health contexts. \nThis workshop is held in conjunction with the Brief Therapy Institute of Sydney \n

SUMMARY:Just Right State\, Brisbane
DESCRIPTION:The JRS programme is for working with school aged children and their parents\, to enhance awareness of their own emotional states and behaviour\, and how this impacts on parent/ child emotional states and engagement patterns. JRS looks at the use of sensory activities and foods\, to help children learn how to self regulate their emotional states and behaviour. It also uses cartoon characters called ‘The Scared Gang’ which represents the different survival and attachment patterns of behaviour. The different characters tell the children how they react to situations and what each of them does to achieve the ‘just-right state’. The goal of the programme is to enable children become more emotionally aware of themselves and of others\, to give them simple tools to enable them to self regulate and achieve the just right state\, whether it is to engage in academic learning\, interacting with their peers\, or to be able to get a good night’s sleep. \nParents learn how to regulate their child from sensory and attachment perspectives. The aim of the programme is to enhance parents’ awareness of their own engagement patterns and how this impacts on their child’s emotional states. It also addresses the underlying reasons for behaviours. Parents first complete a sensory-attachment profile questionnaire that looks at the survival\, sensory\, and attachment behaviours of their child. They learn about; the different levels of self- regulation (physiological\, sensory\, emotional\, and cognitive); the regulating effects of food and activities; and how to create an enriched environment that is tailor made both for them and their child’s sensory-attachment needs. \nChildren are seen in groups of four to six for one hour fifteen minutes once a week. Two facilitators carry out this programme due to the practical elements involved. Parents of the children attending the JRS programme meet together for two hours once a week for six weeks. It runs in parallel to their children’s programme. The children’s facilitators also lead the parents’ programme. \n* This course is limited to 16 places * Attendees must have completed the Sensory Attachment Intervention: Level 1 (delivered by Compass in Aug 2015 or by SAI in the UK) \n

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Practices for Complex Behaviours\, Gold Coast
DESCRIPTION:Despite its inherent joys\, the challenges of parenting can produce considerable stress. These challenges multiply — and the quality of parenting can suffer — when a child displays complex behaviours associated with ADHD or autism. Even under optimal circumstances\, the constant challenges faced by these children can contribute to family conflict and tax parents’ inner resources\, often undoing the best intentions and parenting courses. \nChildren with ADHD or autism\, and their families\, face many unique daily challenges such as inattention\, hyperactivity\, and impulsivity\, which affect self-management and self-regulation. These families can become chronically frustrated or stressed out\, which makes achieving a range of tasks in school or family life that much harder. For professionals working with such families these stressors can often impact the effectiveness of interventions or therapeutic goals underscoring the need for parents to take care of themselves in order to meet the challenges of caring for a child with complex needs with calmness\, kindness\, and consistency. \nMindfulness practices have enjoyed great success with managing mental health issues such as anxiety\, depression and trauma. In recent years these practices have been applied to people with complex disorders such as ADHD and autism with similar success. Drawing from a standardized nine-session program this introductory workshop explores effective Mindfulness practices for helping both parents and children with complex behaviours to stay cool and collected while remaining compassionate\, flexible\, resilient\, and mindful. Delivered in a reassuring style and with opportunities to view and practice exercises for both parents and children. \nYou will learn: \n\nHow to conceptualise complex disorders such as ADHD and autism in a Mindfulness framework\nWhat adaptations to traditional mindful practices are required for children with ADHD/autism\nHow to work with groups of children or young people with ADHD or autism\nHow to instruct Mindful Parenting exercises to parents\nAbout the scientific evidence for mindfulness practices for children with ADHD/autism and their parents\nHow to work with children and parents together in a mindfulness training\nWhy integrating mindfulness practices can strengthen the efficacy of your other interventions.\n\nThis workshop is suitable for all professionals working with families affected by the challenges of complex behaviours associated with disorders such as ADHD and autism. \nDr Esther de Bruin is an Associate Professor at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education at the University of Amsterdam\, as well as a licensed health care psychologist and mindfulness trainer for children at UvA minds\, an academic outpatient treatment center for children and families in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands. She completed her PhD in studies of children with autism and psychotic disorders. Her current research relates to evaluating newly developed mindfulness trainings\, specifically for children with ADHD and autism and their families. \n
