SUMMARY:Dyadic Developmental Practice\, DDP Level 1 Training
DESCRIPTION:Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) is an intervention model developed by Dan Hughes\, Clinical Psychologist (U.S.A.). DDP is family-based and is focused on facilitating the child’s readiness and ability to establish a secure attachment with his/her caregivers. It is called Dyadic Developmental Practice both to focus attention on the importance of reciprocity in parenting\, caregiving and therapy\, and also to draw attention to the fact that abuse\, neglect and trauma can seriously impact on the child’s developmental age and stage. This intervention is theoretically based on the models of attachment theory and intersubjectivity\, and is consistent with the needs of children and young people who have experienced developmental trauma. \nIt is an approach that: \n\nIntegrates recent research in the areas of neurobiology of trauma\, early child development and attachment theory\, to produce a therapeutic  and parenting approach that assists professionals to understand and effectively support children with trauma- attachment problems\, and their families\nCommunicates playfulness\, acceptance\, curiosity and empathy (PACE) in order to help the child regulate their feelings (often fear\, shame and anger) associated with past experiences and to create together new meanings to be integrated into the child’s life story (autobiographical narrative).\nRecognises the vital role which adoptive parents\, foster carers and residential workers play in the recovery of traumatised\, attachment-resistant children.\nProvides a set of principles that can support networks; inform and enrich parenting; and can support the child outside of the home eg. in residential settings and at school\n\nThis introductory 28-hour training course is relevant to professionals and therapists who have experience in communicating with and working therapeutically with children and young people and their families. It is focused on families and residential care homes when children have experienced past developmental trauma and have associated attachment difficulties. Principles and interventions are presented through formal discussion\, case examples\, videotape of therapy sessions\, role-play\, and hand-outs. This course is part of the pre-requisites to becoming a certified DDP practitioner. A MAXIMUM of 24 participants is permitted. \nBy the end of this course participants will understand: \n\nThe impact of secure developmental attachment on neurological\, affective\, cognitive\, and behavioural development\nHow developmental trauma (abuse and neglect) create insecure and disorganised attachment patterns which impede normal development\nPrinciples of psychotherapy\, effective communication and parenting that facilitate the development of attachment security\nSpecific strategies of parenting and communication that facilitate the development of a secure attachment and help children integrate past trauma and abusive experiences\nHow the caregiver’s attachment history and attachment patterns can be important factors when providing care for children who have experienced developmental trauma.\n\nKim Golding is a Clinical Psychologist whose influential work has contributed to improved support for foster\, adoptive and residential parents\, schools and the range of professionals supporting children growing up in care or in adoptive families. She has authored several books including Creating Loving Attachments\, which she co-wrote with Dan Hughes. As a board member of the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Institute she accredits and trains professionals in the approach in the UK and speaks about this work internationally as a leading voice on children with attachment difficulties. \n

SUMMARY:Just Right State\, Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:The JRS programme is for working with school aged children and their parents\, to enhance awareness of their own emotional states and behaviour\, and how this impacts on parent/ child emotional states and engagement patterns. JRS looks at the use of sensory activities and foods\, to help children learn how to self regulate their emotional states and behaviour. It also uses cartoon characters called ‘The Scared Gang’ which represents the different survival and attachment patterns of behaviour. The different characters tell the children how they react to situations and what each of them does to achieve the ‘just-right state’. The goal of the programme is to enable children become more emotionally aware of themselves and of others\, to give them simple tools to enable them to self regulate and achieve the just right state\, whether it is to engage in academic learning\, interacting with their peers\, or to be able to get a good night’s sleep. \nParents learn how to regulate their child from sensory and attachment perspectives. The aim of the programme is to enhance parents’ awareness of their own engagement patterns and how this impacts on their child’s emotional states. It also addresses the underlying reasons for behaviours. Parents first complete a sensory-attachment profile questionnaire that looks at the survival\, sensory\, and attachment behaviours of their child. They learn about; the different levels of self- regulation (physiological\, sensory\, emotional\, and cognitive); the regulating effects of food and activities; and how to create an enriched environment that is tailor made both for them and their child’s sensory-attachment needs. \nChildren are seen in groups of four to six for one hour fifteen minutes once a week. Two facilitators carry out this programme due to the practical elements involved. Parents of the children attending the JRS programme meet together for two hours once a week for six weeks. It runs in parallel to their children’s programme.
