SUMMARY:Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Michael Durrant
DESCRIPTION:Do you support complex clients with limited time? Do your clients focus on the problem rather than how to change?  Would you like to learn an efficient\, evidenced based approach to help clients move forward and reach their treatment outcomes? Book a seat today to add this valuable counseling approach to your toolbox. \nSolution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) offers professionals an efficient\, user-friendly and evidenced based approach that is responsive to the practical realities of working with young people and adults. The role of counsellors\, and other professionals rests largely on the ability to interact with people in ways that emphasises individuals’ strengths/resources\, identifies possible solutions and supports movement to change. \nWith an emphasis on “what works”\, SFBT focuses on the reality that change is the name of the game. It’s used with clients with anxiety\, depression\, trauma\, disruptive behaviours and a host of other emotional and well-being issues. This popular workshop offers a thorough overview of the approach and covers cases from substance abuse\, trauma\, mental health\, child and adolescent difficulties. \nYou will learn: \n\nWhy the fundamental shift from “problem-driven” to “solution-driven” can dramatically change the outcome of any interaction.\nHow to use cooperative relationships and an individual’s language\, beliefs and preferences to define changeable problems\, and develop highly meaningful and specific goals.\nWhen and how to use a range of techniques and tools; through detailed demonstrations\, skills practice exercises\, discussions and video examples of ACTUAL therapy sessions.\nHow the use of “future-focused” questions\, building on exceptions and reframing of problems\, shifts people away from the problem and towards change.\nWhat the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the approach are\, and why the resilience research supports it.\nWhy presenting ideas and interventions as “suggestions” and “experiments” instead of directives can improve the likelihood of clients taking action once they leave your office.\nHow issues such as “risk” fit with the Solution-Focused approach.\n\nMichael Durrant Australia’s leading international trainer of Solution Focused Brief Therapy. He is a psychologist and director of the Brief Therapy Institute in Sydney\, President of the Australasian Association for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy\, Honorary Associate to the Faculty of Education and Social Work – University of Sydney\, and a visiting faculty\, to the Special Education Program – Fontys University\, The Netherlands. He has published four books and numerous articles\, and is particularly known for the application of Solution-Focused interventions in school and mental health contexts. \n

SUMMARY:The Emotional Therapist with Dr Paolo Bertrando
DESCRIPTION:The presence of the therapist\, and how the therapist truly forges a connection with the client in therapy\, can be a crucial factor affecting the client’s healing process. An engaged\, committed\, caring therapist who is mindful of his or her own self―and how that self relates to the client―is a key determinant of how well that client will respond to therapy. \nThe Emotional Therapist is a deep exploration of what it means to be emotional and how to cultivate emotion in the therapeutic relationship. Building on modern systemic family therapy\, Dr Paolo Bertrando introduces participants to working with emotions in therapy using a relationally-focused lens. \nThe integration of a systemic-relational methodology with a knowledge and appreciation of the different emotions involved in people’s lives is useful for practitioners working in any kind of situation\, especially – but not exclusively – when couples\, families\, or children are involved. The relational focus on emotions helps the practitioner to focus on the clients’ own needs and experiences. The workshop will be interactive and experiential\, as the presenter helps participants to develop skills in working with emotions by the use of a practice-centred teaching method\, making the concepts easy to grasp and to put to immediate application. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nHow emotions have been dealt with in different therapeutic models\nHow to conceptualise emotions as part of a relational communication process between people including therapist and client\, rather than intrapsychic phenomena only\nThe difference between this approach and other emotion-centred therapeutic models (such as Emotionally Focused Therapy or attachment-based therapy)\nHow to work with these ideas in the therapy session (no matter what the participant’s framework is)\nHow to identify prominent emotions and hidden emotions in the course of a session\nHow to put emotions in context and understand their relevance in the real life experience of clients\nGuidelines for shifting from facts to feelings in the course of a session\, especially when the session is “stuck”\nA set of questions and other interventions aimed at bringing emotions to the fore\n\nThe Emotional Therapist helps practitioners\, both new and experienced in family therapy\, to develop a set of guidelines to building emotion-centred sessions using an emotional lens in practical exercises\, case work\, role plays that links theory to practice. \nDr Paolo Bertrando is a psychiatrist and systemic therapist\, trained in the Milan Approach (by Boscolo & Cecchin). He has been a trainer at the Milan Centre for Family Therapy and the director of the Episteme Systemic Training Centre. Currently he is the director of the Systemic-Dialogical School in Bergamo. He has published several books including the Emotions and the Therapist. Dr. Bertrando has held workshops and seminars related to systemic therapy in Italy\, Spain\, Norway\, Denmark\, Greece\, United Kingdom\, Ireland\, Chile\, Colombia\, Mexico\, Singapore\, New Zealand and Australia. \n
