DESCRIPTION:Anxiety explained. Kids empowered! \nCompass proudly opens the 2020 training calendar with Karen Young\, author of the hugely popular Hey Warrior! Karen will present a short presentation on Anxiety in the Classroom.\nAnxiety loves anything unfamiliar or any situation that comes with any potential for embarrassment\, failure\, humiliation\, shame\, or separation from a loved one – and school is ripe for all of them. Anxiety can significantly affect friendships\, confidence\, and school performance – but it doesn’t have to be this way. All children and teens need the right support to thrive\, and even the smallest considerations can go a long way to helping children with anxiety find the very best version of themselves. In this short presentation on Anxiety in the Classroom for educators\, Karen Young will cover: \nThe conversation that can make a difference to children and teens.\nHow anxiety interferes with grades and performance.\nThe different ways anxiety can manifest at school (including avoidance\, tears\, anger\, poor grades\, lack of engagement\, hyperactivity). \n90 minute presentation and 15 min Q+A \nIn her work as a psychologist\, Karen Young  has worked extensively with children\, teens and families. More recently\, Karen founded ‘Hey Sigmund’\, an online resource  that attracts millions of readers each year and provides accessible\, contemporary\, research-driven information on anxiety\, children and adolescents. Grounded in neuroscience and drawing on gestalt\, mindfulness\, ACT\, CBT to inform a roadmap to therapy. Karen is author of ‘Hey Warrior’\, ‘Hey Awesome’ and the newly published ‘But We’re Not Lions’ – books for kids to help them understand anxiety and find their ‘brave’.\nEngaging and charismatic\, Karen’s ability to bring out the brave in all of us makes her a popular choice for pupil free days\, parent nights\, keynotes and conference workshops for all ages! \nAll proceeds from this lecture go to support Ronald MacDonald House South East Queensland. \n

SUMMARY:ATTACHMENT STYLE INTERVIEW
DESCRIPTION:Attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space (Ainsworth\, 1973; Bowlby\, 1969).  Attachment theory explains how the primary carer-child relationship emerges and influences subsequent emotional and physiological development. This has been shown to be universal across cultures. \nA child’s initial relationship with their primary carer acts as a blueprint for future relationships and provides the infant with an internalised model of themselves and others. Developing a secure attachment enables the child to experience him or herself as loveable and to cultivate a belief about others that they are trustworthy. However\, when a caregiver is emotionally or physically unavailable or responds inconsistently the child can then internalise a very different story and\, as a consequence\, struggle to form healthy\, meaningful relationships\, either pushing people away or becoming clingy and overdependent. \nThe Attachment Style Interview (ASI) is an evidence based instrument\, that enhances practitioners’ understanding of family dynamics and of the capacity of caregivers to develop meaningful strategies in promoting resilience. Designed by Professor Antonia Bifulco and her team at the Centre for Abuse and Trauma Studies at Middlesex University\, the ASI  has been used extensively in research studies to examine psychosocial risks for mental health problems. Its reliability and validity is established among researchers (including several cross-cultural studies) and moderate and markedly insecure attachment styles have been shown to be associated with depression and social factors such as poor support\, low self-esteem and early adverse childhood experience. This short presentation will cover: \nAn introduction to attachment Styles:\nWhat are they\nWhat do they tell us about adult parenting\nTheir importance in determining parenting capacity and family and environmental factors in relation to fostering/adoption\, reunification  and child protection\nAssessing Attachment Style:\nAttachment Style Interview (ASI)\nstrengths\, resilience and risks in individuals\nthe couple relationship\nthe support system that underpins families with children who have experienced trauma\, neglect  and/or abuse\nHow understanding the Attachment Style of your clients can be used in your work to determine strategies that promote resilience and stability in families \n90 min presentation followed by Q+A.  \nPresented by Liz Sanders and Lisa Gardiner \nAll proceeds from this lecture go to support Little Stars Kids creating a better life for kids in foster care. \n
