SUMMARY:Five Casework/Counselling exercises to engage anyone about anything - 15-Feb-2023
DESCRIPTION:In casework or counselling\, the first and most important thing is to connect with the person in front of us\, to build a relationship\, so that together\, we can explore what’s important\, and what’s troubling\, to this person. Engagement is about what\, how and who. It’s about the process of catching a person’s attention about why we are meeting\, it’s about firing their imagination in terms of how we how we might work together\, and about creating an increased hope and experience that things can be different. \n  \nThe workshop will take you through a variety of multi-sensory exercises that can be used in-person or online. The exercises will include the use of image and video for any content\, simple drawing/‘scribbles’\, movement and conversational as well as non-verbal reflective activities. \nParticipants in this 3-hour workshop will: \na) Experience first hand the activities \nb) Explore how these activities can lead to a deepening of conversations and the possibility of \ninformed change \nc) Understand the thinking/principles behind the activities \nWhen: Wednesday 15th February 2023 from 9.30am-12.30pm. \nWhere: Online\, delivered via Zoom. You will receive a Zoom link prior to the workshop where you will be able to access the eWorkshop. \nCost: The early bird booking fee (before the 1st February 2023) is $195.00 (GST included). The full price after the 1st February is $250..00 (GST included). \nTo register: Register and complete payment. A Tax Invoice will be emailed to you. The payment needs to be completed before the workshop occurs\, for the registration to be fully confirmed. \nFacilitator: Peter Slattery \nMany years ago\, Peter did a B.A. in Social Science and an M.A. in Psychology. He says he thoroughly enjoyed his time at university and freely admits to having learned something. He also says that the past 30 plus years of working with young people\, especially with those having a hard time of life\, have taught him a lot more\, and given him some ideas about how to make use of what he learned at university. Today\, Peter works freelance across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand\, with occasional jaunts into Asia\, North America\, the U.K. and Europe. He continues working with young people in all the places you expect to find them; within all the school systems\, as well as within refuges\, rehab centres\, the many forms that youth programs take and in juvenile justice settings. Having done this work for a long time now\, Peter finds himself in demand as a trainer of workers\, as a supervisor and mentor\, and seems to be constantly invited to speak at conferences both within Australia and overseas. He has published extensively in both the E and the hard-copy worlds. He says he considers himself extremely lucky\, and thinks of his work as an uplifting challenge\, a privilege\, a joy and often\, just a lot of fun. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Aboriginal Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore both risk factors and protective behaviours for Aboriginal peoples experiencing mental health issues by addressing the critical issues outlined below. These include grief about the loss of culture\, land\, connection; and many more areas; often connected to Australia’s history of invasion.\n\n  \nIdeal for\nClinicians\, social workers\, community organisation workers\, health professionals\, youth workers\, child and family workers and counsellors with any level of experience. \n\n  \nParticipants will learn about\nStolen Generations: The impact of the past Stolen Generations and ongoing removal of children puts a lot of mental pressure on people\, especially when government departments just follow procedures.\nTrauma: Trauma is a huge factor in Aboriginal health and an agent for many health conditions. If unresolved\, trauma can debilitate a person and be passed on to the next generation.\nLoss of identity and culture: When Aboriginal people are separated from their culture and identity\, for example when they don’t live on their traditional homelands or don’t know where they come from\, they don’t feel complete and may search for who they are.\nDiscrimination and racism: Discrimination based on race or culture\, as well as racism\, can have a huge impact on any person’s mental health. \n\n  \nAbout the presenter\nMelinda Brown is a Ngunnawal woman who resides in the Northern Rivers Bundjalung Nation and has a Masters in Indigenous Healing and Trauma. She is the Director of Spirit Dreaming Education and Training Solutions and Australian Family Group Conferencing\, and is an experienced consultant and trainer\, developing and delivering training and workshops for government and corporate businesses. \n\n  \nFormat\n75 minutes of content and 15 minutes of moderated Q&As. \n\n  \nRegistration information\nRegistrations close 48 hours before the webinar start time. \nIf paying by invoice\, proof of payment needs to be provided at least 24 hours ahead of the event. \nIn addition to the live event link\, all registrants will receive a link to the webinar recording post-event. \nWhen you click to book\, you will be taken to our new and improved payment gateway.
