Position Title: Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner

Purpose of the position
The Family Relationship Centre provides a comprehensive service including Family Dispute Resolution Services under the Family Law Act and a range of information and referral services to the community. The Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner undertakes thorough assessments of families who wish to access the Family Dispute Resolution service and where appropriate conducts mediation sessions (joint sessions, face to face, shuttle or via technology) to help the family focus on the needs of children; develops parenting plans regarding the care and wellbeing of their children and empowers parents to resolve their own issues.
Reports to the Program Manager, Family Relationship Centre
Collaborative working relationships with all ac.care staff and programs.
Out-of-hours work including travel involving overnight absences may be required
Satisfactory Child Related Employment Screening must be maintained in accordance
with ac.care policy
Child Safe Environment Certificate must be maintained in accordance with ac.care policy
Minimum current SA ‘Class C’ (or interstate equivalent) driver’s license is essential and
the employee must be willing to drive in the course of their duties.
1 Contribute to the provision of a high quality Family Dispute Resolution service by:
Providing primary dispute resolution services which help families focus on the needs of
children through child focussed practice and best practise models
Providing comprehensive assessments to determine the suitability of Family Dispute
Resolution including issues such as violence and child abuse and the development of
Providing advocacy and referral services to any persons accessing the Family Relationship
Centre to help them identify issues and options
Providing culturally responsive services
Developing and maintain relationships and networks with referral sources
Keeping accurate and up to date client files
Contributing to the development, monitoring and evaluation of the programs
Participating in professional development opportunities to maintain and develop skills
2 Perform other duties allocated appropriate to position and organisational needs, and to
undertake any relevant task as directed by the CEO as part of the employer/employee
relationship within the scope of the role.
Selection criteria – essential
Relevant tertiary qualification; or, relevant vocational qualification with substantial
relevant experience, expertise and competence attained through previous appointments.
Must be willing to work towards national accreditation to provide Family Dispute
Experience working with families and parents
Experience working in a community services setting
Excellent communication skills (listening, written and verbal)
Ability to utilise Family Dispute Resolution best practices
Ability to utilise child focussed practice.
Ability to undertake comprehensive assessments
Ability to establish rapport and maintain a positive relationship with client group
Ability to manage time effectively, set priorities, plan and organise workload and achieve client specified outcomes
Ability to liaise and negotiate with clients and service providers
High level of conflict resolution and advocacy skills
Ability to interpret legislation, policies and procedures within a practical context
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of software
Qualified Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner
Knowledge of the Family Law Act
Knowledge of community services and resources available to assist clients in the Limestone Coast region.
