Connecting With ‘Hard-To-Reach’ Young People eWorkshop 23-Oct-2024
October 23 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm AEDT
$195Working with young people who are disengaging from school, family, those who care about them, means doing something unexpected: nothing ‘clever’ but something less likely so we can elicit a response of curiosity; a response of: ‘Okay let’s see…’ Each of the activities in this e workshop aims to, openly and intriguingly, do exactly this.
Young people are super-physical, super-influenced by their emotions, and respond super-impulsively to what’s going on around them. This workshop will take you through a process that looks at how to harness all this particularly when a young person seems grumpy, bored or even hostile. and/or disengaged. There’s no doubt that at times young people can be challenging, especially young people having a hard time in life. But it’s always rewarding, worthwhile, often a lot of fun, and at times uplifting and moving.
Participants in this 3-hour eWorkshop will gain, insight and ideas :
· Experience the strategies first hand.
· Explore how we can adjust/morph these activities so they fit with your style and the young people you are working with.
· Understand the underlying ‘Do’s’ and ‘Don’t’ of working with ‘hard-to-reach’ young people.
· Be clear about how each of these activities can be used in different situations and with different issues/concerns.
· Be clear about the thinking, the principles upon which these activities are based.

Facilitator: Peter Slattery
Many years ago, Peter did a B.A. in Social Science and an M.A. in Psychology. He says he thoroughly enjoyed his time at university and freely admits to having learned something. He also says that the past 30 plus years of working with young people, especially with those having a hard time of life, have taught him a lot more, and given him some ideas about how to make use of what he learned at university. Today, Peter works freelance across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, with occasional jaunts into Asia, North America, the U.K. and Europe. He continues working with young people in all the places you expect to find them; within all the school systems, as well as within refuges, rehab centres, the many forms that youth programs take and in juvenile justice settings. Having done this work for a long time now, Peter finds himself in demand as a trainer of workers, as a supervisor and mentor, and seems to be constantly invited to speak at conferences both within Australia and overseas. He has published extensively in both the E and the hard-copy worlds. He says he considers himself extremely lucky, and thinks of his work as an uplifting challenge, a privilege, a joy and often, just a lot of fun.
