Groupwork- 4 Variations
July 2, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm AEST
$255These four approaches are all Groupwork processes – similar and overlapping, yet quite different. In each of these, the needs of the participants are always foremost and guide what we do, yet how we do this varies enormously. This workshop will take you through all four processes.
- ‘Presenting’ is more about the presenter’s content; who is seeking to pass something on; ideas, information, strategies…
- ‘Leading’ is also about the leader’s content and they are taking people through it, but constantly guided by input from participants and blending the two
- ‘Facilitating’ is all about the content of the participants. The facilitator helps others work through their concerns, topics, issues, worries, hopes or dreams. Ideally, a very clear role for the facilitator is negotiated beforehand; and an essential part of this is being clear as to whether the facilitator is guided completely by the participants or whether the facilitator’s role is more ‘dynamic’ where they have permission to raise things which the group may have overlooked. This is a vital consideration particularly when the facilitator has experience/knowledge of the content area
- Train the trainer: This is a tricky title because it has come to mean different things. And this we will unravel in the workshop because it’s important to negotiate clearly what we are required to do in any Train the Trainer workshop. Essentially though It’s reasonable to assume that those attending a ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop are skilled and experienced in their field and are going to train others to do the same work. While they know their craft they be less confident about how to teach others, and what they are looking for is an understanding of what are generally regarded as Adult Learning Principles, engaging ways of passing on information and skills and some general understanding of groupwork. And that’s exactly what we shall explore in this workshop.
