Friendship Program Volunteer Training

Baptist Care SA Friendship Program matches locals from the community to new arrivals with a refugee or asylum seeker background, to assist them to settle in Adelaide. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of a minimum of 6 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months.
The training is designed to equip people for their volunteer role, to provide a better understanding of the issues associated with refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, and to debunk misunderstandings and misinformation about refugees and asylum seekers.
Baptist Care SA is particularly seeking volunteers located in the inner northern and outer northern Adelaide suburbs.
The course is completed over two evenings and includes:
- The role of a program volunteer
- Personal boundaries
- Position description
- Refugees in a global context
- Australia’s response to refugees and asylum seekers
- The difference between asylum seekers, refugees and migrants
- Support available to refugees and asylum seekers
- Support available to Friendship program volunteers
- Cultural awareness
- Simulated refugee experience
- Volunteer agreement
- Next steps
